Default 1996 fuel pump availability

My 1996 Cherokee needs a new fuel pump. The dealers are on backorder and JC Whitney's supplier doesn't make one for a 1996 model. It seems that 1995 and older use an in tank fuel pump with the pressure regulator on the fuel rail. The 1997 and newer have the pump and regulator in the fuel tank where it is mounted on the top of the tank. You have to drop the tank to replace this type of pump. My 1996 has the pump and regulator in the tank but it is mounted on the side of the tank. Does anyone know where I can get a pump assembly for a 1996 model?

I've tried Advance, Auto Zone, and Nappa. they all have a single pump without the regulator and sender unit attached.

They show six different pumps for the '96.

Thanks for the suggestion. Rock Auto also only offers the "pump only". I need the regulator pump and sender unit assembly.

pepboys had the set up for me about 3 weeks ago, in stock, $182 bucks. 96 is year exclusive and won't interchange. If you need only the pump, I know 97 will work, bolts right in. 96 was the year they put the regulator in the tank and they said oops that ain't such a good idea.

So what it is that is unique to the 96's exactly? Is it just that the regulator is internal to the fuel tank? If so, can I buy a regulator seperately and install that? I have a walbro 255 I'd like to install while I'm in there, will it fit?

I haven't found a straight answer on this regarding 96s.

In 96, Chrysler had this genius idea to make the fuel pump, sending unit and regulator all one unit. Needless to say, in 97 they found a different style that worked much better, so 96 sits with this unique fuel pump set up and while I have found that the pump out of a 95 fits, I believe that it is the only piece that is interchangeable in the set up. the pump I had off a 93 was too big and in 97 they switched to plastic tanks with the pick up on the top. Not sure about pumps and regulators on them and whether they will interchange. as for aftermarket, not sure, try and see.

Default Checked PepBoys

I Called PepBoys for parts and it sounds like they are offering the 1995 pump only. I may try to take my Jeep there and see if they can come up with a solution. If the 95 pump only will fit I may try that, but the manufacturer and my mechanic suggest that you replace the assembly. Thanks for the suggesstions. When I get it fixed I'll update this site.

Why do you think the pump assembly is bad?

Default Bad fuel pump symptoms

The symptoms I had that indicated a bad fuel pump.

1) While driving at say 55 and you push the petal to the metal, my Jeep will accelerated very slowly.

2) While using the on ramp for the interstate my jeep sometimes kicks and sputters while getting up to speed.

3) If my Jeep has not been started in say 3 days and I go to start it the first turn of the key, it will not start. If I turn the key to start for only one second and then leave the ignition on. Then wait ten seconds when I first start the car. The second try it starts immediately. (this may be caused by the pressure regulator which on the '96 model is in the fuel tank next to the pump.

I'd suggest doing a fuel pressure test before investing in a new fuel pump.

Like FrankZ I did a fuel rail test and found out I was having a electrical problem It acted like fuel problem. Pressure should be about 50 to 60 psi

Alright here's the FINAL GOUGE on the infamous 1996 Cherokee 4.0 "FUEL MODULES" In short- they don't make them anymore. I called a dealer here and he couldn't get one I did get the correct OEM part number which is 5003869AA. The lowest price I could find online was the $280 range. Some crooks are asking 700 plus for them- F them I say. Here's a few links, or you can just do a search on the part number and it will come up.

Hope this helps and it looks like for me this is the only option as I'm 99.9999% sure the FPR is out on mine.
