1996 4.0 tick / knock
Ok my buddy is posting the video to you tube as I write this so I should have one to post so but we're looking at buying a 96 that's the guy says is knocking we went and looked at it and I took my screw driver and it I sounds like a bad bad lifter knock I can't hear it as well down by the mains and where the rods connect you hear it mostly at the deck height between cylinders one and two most on the passenger side. I was thinking lifters or push rods not a knock. Then I remember the piston kilts break. Can anyone enlighten me on the differences of noise and when I get the video up give their opinions. If we buy it well drop the pan and know for sure.

It could be. But it just sound awful high up in the block to be a rod or a main. It's much quieter down by the mains and the rods. Louder just above the cam

I couldn't open the file, but have you checked your exhaust manifold for cracks, made sure your manifold was still tight to the block? Simple free things to check before writing off lifter noise.

Well we don't own it yet my buddy wants to buy it for his toy but wants to know more of what it could be. And from my experience a rod or a main will cause noise low down in the block. It's not a normal exhaust manifold noise to me and it sound like a stuck lifter to me my 90 makes a softer noise like it some times when it's been sitting for a spell. But I also told him it could be a broken kilt.

From the sound of it, that is for sure rod knock. Usually piston skirts only break on the 2000+ 4.0L's because they changed the piston design. That noise is too slow and loud to be just lifter tick.

My opinion is that's most definitely coming from a rod. Never heard lifters with that sound. Almost 40 yrs drag racing, towing, truck driving, ect that was almost 100% of the time a rod.
