Default Driver's door detent has failed

Does anybody know what to do with a broken front door detent spring? It looks like the detent is welded to the door & not easy to remove or replace. Suggestions?

The door check? There is a nut on either side of check. Remove the nuts and the interior door panel. Will have to reach your hand into the door cavity to remove door check.

Just trying to get a chuckle here this morning, I fixed mine with an empty plastic soda bottle.

The main function of the door checks is as a limiter. The hinges can be damaged, door misaligned if door is allowed to hyper-extend from wind or forceful opening. Learned that through experience, when it happens it also bends fender panel and door skin.

Oh you mean the door jamb switch, oops

I figured it out from Bugout's post, and also had a chuckle.

You did not state the year of your XJ however, I would certainly take a close look at your upper door hinge where it is welded to the door frame structure, cracking is common in this area. check your door hinge pin for any looseness (Dorman makes a repair kit) as this may have led to the failure of your door check.

If the jamb switch does not have a visible capture nut, than the nut is on other side. Will have to remove plastic fender liner in wheel well to access it. There is also a piece of foam to remove that covers hinges.

I think you were on the right track Steve He indicated a part attached to the door so that would be the check I suppose? But the Soda Bottle trick could be used for dual purpose and hold the switch down and the door open at the same time. lol

I just haven't got around to replacing mine the correct way like you suggested yet.

Guess we shall see..
The door check usually ends up making popping noises and can pull out the chassis side mount.
They can often be somewhat fixed by removing arm from unit and partially grinding down/smoothing out the humps that hold the door at 1/2 open.
Make sure rubber stop is in place also.
Reference picture of new one.

Oh, good grief! What a lousy first post! Guess that's what happens when you post at 2:00 in the morning.

It's a '98 Grand Cherokee ZJ. My front door hinge is welded to the door and on that are two round rollers that interact with a spring-loaded metal pin. It looks like the nylon rollers deteriorated and broke off. But it also looks like they mount with rivets to the welded piece. Surely this is a common problem. What's the fix?

Ok, now that I've correctly & adequately identified my Jeep, all the responses dried up? Nobody's ever had this part fail before?

Well, this turned into a curious thread. I had a handful of posts that offered advice about the wrong thing in a hurry. Then, once I clarified the question, nobody posted. It's now 3 1/2 years later, and my driver's door still won't remain open on the detent.

Any suggestions yet?

In three and a half years, has it been to a shop to be checked? Have you taken the door panel off to investigate? Have you been to a pick-n-pull junk yard and taken one apart to see how it works or for triial run on repair process?
Or, have you been sitting by your laptop for three and a half years waiting for someone here to fix it for you?
