1995 XJ No start...
OK so last week I had a strange noise come from under the hood- at first I though it was a rod, but turns out is was my compressor bearings failing. I put tools in the Heep and went to work in the morning, figuring I could grab one from the JY on lunch and be fine. Well I guess it was worse than I thought because I only made it about 2 miles from home when it failed horribly and threw the belt. I limped it home by getting up to speed and shutting it off and coasting- never overheated. So I take the truck to work and get a compressor. I put it on in the dark and tightened up the belt. I was using a mark I put on the PS slider for tension, or so I thought. Once the compressor was on and belt back on I started it up. Horrible belt noise- the belt was way too tight- the "mark" I was using must have been made by me or the belt when is slipped, the actual mark was faded and about 1.5" looser. Oops. It only ran about 15 seconds before I shut it off. I loosened the belt and tried again and it did not start. I wore down the battery trying, and it seemed like it was turning over slow, so I got a new starter. It now turns over quicker, but still does not fire or start. Any ideas???

Was gonna suggest the belt may have torn some wires out but you said it ran for 15 seconds before you turned it off. So to tell you the truth i have no clue. maybe coincidence some thing else failed? Sorry man not much help.

Do you hear the fuel pump running for three seconds when you turn the key to the ON (or RUN) position? Have you removed the coil wire from the distributor cap and checked for spark?

I did check the fuel pump (I have a new one in the box, just in case). I have not checked the coil, I suppose I should verify spark, although it was firing a bit, just not starting. It could be weak spark.
