Is/was the check engine light on?
Have you checked for any engine fault codes?

Backfiring generally indicates a fuel/air imbalance. Backfiring in the intake is usually a "lean" condition. Backfiring out of the exhaust is usually a "rich" condition.
Job #1 is to check comprehensively for a vacuum leak. Can be under the hood or in your exhaust system.
If no vacuum leaks found, get a fuel pressure gauge and install it on the schrader valve on your fuel rail. This gauge can be rented from some big box parts stores. Compare your readings to factory spec. Without verifying your actual pressure with a gauge, you are just "guessing" on fuel delivery.
Use this technique to check for any soft/stored codes in the computer.
