Default 1991 xj fuel pump

Hello!

I have an ongoing issue with my 1991 xj limited. it has a 20 gal fuel tank with the in-tank fuel pump that sits at an angle. When i got it, the fuel pump was dreadfully loud. I did my research and was warned by every bit of online advice that the new ones are garbage. Well, just had to try it. I bought the new Delphi one off of rock auto and installed it. Worked great! For about 2000 miles. It just started making a horrible whining noise. It hasn't broke yet but I'm expecting it to soon. In any case it's actually louder than the previous one, and I daily drive mine so this situation is unlivable.

Fwiw I've kept my eye on fb marketplace, ebay, and junkyards for stock pumps. No luck, except I got one from a junkyard and all the seals were crusty so I didn't risk the install on that one.

Basically, I'm willing to do a fuel tank swap if there's a better fuel pump/fuel tank assembly that can work in the '91 xj with non-crap fuel pumps. Or, I'm also willing to modify the current situation for a non-stock in-line pump which would be very nice. Has anyone here dealt with this problem? Has anyone had better luck with a different fuel pump brand? I'm assuming all the new ones are from the same factory and basically the same garbage. I will take literally any suggestions because I have zero idea what else to do besides replace the fuel pump every 2000 miles.

This is what my fuel pump looks like: https://www.quadratec.com/p/accupart/fuel-pump-hanger-assembly-cherokee-xj-efm0000763a?gad_source=1&gad_campaignid=1955537803 1&gbraid=0AAAAAD_wpjhuadOtNQ1seCKi0tegZDNwy&gclid= Cj0KCQjw_dbABhC5ARIsAAh2Z-RWzDj_coTlgnZXckhNqsWIe_3btWZiQ2nlKIGZAfJ8d6MEdw9L 8zkaAq6vEALw_wcB

Thanks,
Lauren

Is your fuel pump ballast resistor good?

Oh dang I didn't even know that was a thing. Read up in the manual, and I just checked the voltage on both sides, reading 0 on both which makes me think the relay is stuck so that it's constantly bypassing the resistor or something like that. Thanks! I'm gonna go through that circuit and figure out what's up.

For the sake of debate... an inline pump mounted externally on per say your frame rail will be louder than your in tank pump setup soo if noise is a concern keep your current "in tank" configuration.

As far as pump quality itself goes you can utilize just about any fuel pump youd like to and adapt it to your sending unit.

Aremotive is a common brand source for the LS swap crowd and reputable for quality/performance.

I literally just finished adapting one to a TJ tank setup for mine.
