Default 1991 Cherokee Air Conditioning

I currently have a 1991 jeep Cherokee in stock condition. Was wondering what my options are regarding the stock air conditioning. I dont believe anyone recharges that air conditioning anymore because of the switch over to 134 .
Do garages still do that or does the stock air conditioning need upgraded? Im absolutely clueless.
Any help appreciated.

There are shops that have R12 but it can be expensive and you still have to repair the leak or what ever else might be wrong with your system before you get it recharged, probably cheaper in the long run to convert to R134 .

There are shops that still do it. As for means of getting R12, the internet is a good one, Ebay, Craigslist, etc.

Does your ac have a leak or what? Jump the ac low pressure switch temporarily and see if it will work.

I highly recommend fixing the leak and filling with r12. R12 is still easily found. Call local heating and air guys until you find the old school guy instead of shops. You might find someone who will do it. PAY FOR THE R12 or pay to convert. EITHER CHOICE WILL COST $150+

I suggest pulling an r134a system from a parts Cherokee and installing it into your 91 as needed. (Only if you want to convert)

I just converted mine from r12 to r134a. I used new hoses, new green orings, new dryer, swapped to 97+ condenser (had to get two hoses custom made going from threaded fittings 96- to snap fit 97+ for the new style condenser $125) , used r134a compressor.
Lots of work and it would have cost less to just pay for r12 lol.

You could also just send it, get the r12 pulled and charge with 134a.

I do not mean to high jack your thread but I have an 88, lets say i was going to replace the whole system to r134a.

What do i need? The compressor, condenser, drier , AC lines, and heater core ( i know its a mission but if i am going this far i might as well do all of it).

And if i upgrade to r134a, then do i use the later model stuff (compressor, condenser, drier, lines, heater core) or use 88 year items?

You can use the 88 compressor with adapter fittings.
New green orings
Ac oil
Unless your heater core is bad already you don't have to change it.
I kept the r12 Evaporatre core because they are less prone to leak than the later r134.

To answer your question, to do the conversion right, you need to replace the hoses, O rings and accumulator. Recharge with proper oil and that is all that is needed.

Wondering how much I should expect to pay to have the r12 AC vacuumed AND flushed on a 91’ Sport? Located in Indy here.
