Default 1990 XJ Oil leak after engine swap

So, first of all I did an engine swap and I couldn't have completed it without this forum... Thanx to all!

After I had it all done and running, I have smoke coming from under the hood- smells like burning oil. I then find a very constant drip of oil (almost a stream). It's falling on the exhaust pipe, causing the smoke. It looks like the oil is coming from the bell housing, but that can't be right.... right?

I asked a mechanic (in training-- going to school to be one), he said it sounds like the rear main seal. He doesn't really have any Jeep experience and he was wrong about a couple other questions I had during the swap, so please...... did I damage the rear main seal when I married the engine and tranny? If so, is there another thread with step-by-steps on how to change it?

Thanx all.
