That is cool that it was that easy,it is the first time I have seen just cleaning those relays worked.
I would leave the relays the way they are, they are probably from the factory and are what is suppose to be there,if anything just carry a spare.
Do not feel bad about auto electrical,I have worked in power plants for over 30 years and it is easy in comparison to cars.

The relays with the 5th lug are like that so that they can not be inserted wrong. Keep a spare or two in your glovebox. BTW if that had not fixed your problem the next thing would have been the ignition switch itself.(located at the base of the steering column)
Glad you got it running and starting correctly.

Just a quick question of the OP.
Does your heap have the factory security system?
If it does, then everytime your battery is disconnected or dies you have to reset it by turning the key in the drivers door back and forth a few times.
Removing and reinserting the relays probably accomplished the same thing.
I learned this the hard way...... after 3 days of hair pulling I can't afford.

Five terminals: Two for the coil (+/-) and Three for the internal switch. Of those three, one is common (C), one is the normally closed (NC) switch contact and the other is for the normally open (NO) switch contact. Not all circuits using relays need both the NO and the NC switches. That's why they can be swapped around until you've exhausted all your swap-ability. Sooner or later swapping relays no longer solves relay-related problems.

My 96 did the same thing only it wasn't the relays. Turned out to be the ignition switch. My jeep would start and after i released the key it would turn off because it would rotate back too far or something like that. I replaced it and viola thar she runs.
Just a suggestion check you ignition switch out to be on the safe side. Mine was actually burnt on the back side from it shorting out for what seemed to be a long time.
