That's pretty neat, reminds me of the old full time 4WD NP203 to part time 4WD NP205 conversions to GM trucks in the 1970's.

Same deal here, but the CV axles and front driveshaft are something different for the Selec-Trac models as seen in the service manual. Were those left in there after the conversion to the Command-Trac system?

1987 was such an odd year reading it and driving it.

The shifter has a different "gate" for a 242 vs 231.

Post #30 shows the 242 layout. A 231 does not have the full time position, just 4-High, N and 4-Low.

So, put a 231 shifter gate in yours.

Do you think I need to? I haven't used 4 low much, but it seems to shift OK, (now that I know it's a 231). I do want to look into the lack of a light...also: Just noticed what seems a pretty new Rad leaking, my damper pulley falling apart, and have the new RM& pan gasket here also. Record rain (gully washer) messed up my hydro power pipe.

Put light on the bottom of the bottom of the list.

Hydro is repaired. Napa has the pulley in stock, guess $44 something is about $50 out the door.

Question. Besides eating through the timing chain cover, I wonder what happens when the outer ring comes off...maybe I'll take brown to the auto parts.
