I just need to know if the engine has to be pulled to change the freeze plugs on back of the block / head? I also don't have a good feeling about this question as I do have the service manual and there are no good pictures and nothing is mentioned about this.

yes you do there is no room to change them in the car.

head has one on the back side up against the firewall. IIRC there are two behind the flywheel/flexplate too.

what is a freeze plug? I have heard the term but have no idea what it's function is. Just gathering information.

A freeze plug is just what its name implies,it is to protect your engine from cracking should your engine freeze,the water exspands and cracks the block,the freeze plug is suppose to pop out to prevent this,they are the big washers on the block,antifreeze is suppose to help also,but it is also keeps solids from forming in your block and plating out on the inside of the block and radiator,that is what you see when your radiator is plug is minerals that came of solution and attached themselfs to the metal,antifreeze keeps them in solution,it just keeps them in suspension,you are suppose to fill your engine with distilled water so it is free of minerals,but most of us do not. Hope that helps.
