Default 1990 4.0 direct replacement with 1999 4.0?

new to the cherokee. lovin it but threw a rod or something bad! sounds likes theres rocks in a cylinder. im going to tear it apart to double check but but im am pretty sure it needs to be compleatly relpaced.

so the question i cant find a straight answer for is this "will a 1999 jeep cherokee I-6 4.0 be a direct replacement for a 1990 cherokee or are the sensors different and it wont work?"

i know 2000 and 01's wont work due to no distributor. but please let me know if this will work.

THANKS
DILAN

Don't see why not. There may be a sensor mounting hole or two extra but you can block them. Are you just going to use the long block? Thats JUST the head and block. no intake exhaust etc?
I think 90 is the swing year when you may have renix AND chryco engines. From other threads here I get the feeling the intake and exhaust maifolds are slightly different between renix and chryco.

You can replace it with anything from 87-90 for direct replacement,in 91 there were many changes made to the intake exhaust, dist, flexplate, etc. You can use the longblock, but even with that you will find it not exact. The bolt holes on the intake compared to the pre 91s are just a little different, but will bolt up. I have a 91 in my 89 and it was not to bad. The way a 91 exhaust is even different, they are not vertical like 87-90.
