I just wanted to stay in touch today.
Cruiser54 is right buy a volt meter.
I use to be afraid to do electrical work, but not any more, and with these guys to help you, you can relax.
Chilton manuals are good to a certain extent, but Chilton has never talked to me on the net.
And NO!~I won't have time to adjust the rod from the key cylinder to the ignition switch until Saturday.
Thanks!~John

There's a diagram in my sig showing the bottom right ground wire on your start relay. If jiggling doesn't work try grounding that. (Make sure it's in park!)
The ign switch adjusts up and down. With a meter or test light you could see if it's adjusted so with the key turned it's juicing the ign terminal on the start relay.

Sorry!~Cruiser54, I'm having a difficult time with this 89 Laredo 4.0L.
Never had so many electrical problems.
Yesterday the jeep sputtered and had no power at all.
I shut it off and then couldn't start it.
I dropped everything after work and went to work on it.
So far I adjusted the ignition switch and everything works except the turn signals. Oh!~the key returns now after being in the start position.
Have power to the starter, but only makes a noise, but won't start.
Pulled the new starter out and used jumper cables and it appears the starter just doesn't have the tork or the speed it should have, but checked it with my Jeep battery. I'll try another battery.
Ok!~another thing I notice is that I see the volt gage on my dash says it not barely charging, it use to be around 13.
Accessories...fan, clock, wipers, and radio working, turn signal not working.
Will check the starter again, still doesn't explain the lost of engine power.
Mine (if you remember)a is 5 speed manual trans ( not AWD) 4 wheel drive. Trying to give you as much info as possible.
Almost reminded me of the cps when it acted up and lost power.
Trying not to get frustrated, but it do bother me that I didn't keep the new starter relay. Could that be the problem now?
Well still doesn't explain the lost of power-- no acceleration.
I hope it simple?
Thanks!~John

Well the starter has more pep when I tried it with my Toyota battery.
My volt meter says the battery is at 12.23 volts.
Guess I have to wait till tomorrow to buy another starter relay.
Tonight I'll put the starter back in.
Could it be the alternator?
The Jeep gage in the dash wasn't showing the 13 volts like normal.
One of my friends thought it was the battery.
It won't start.
Any one ever have this happen after replacing the ignition switch?
Going to chart the battery and see what happens.

It sounds like you are not charging. Dash gauge aside 13.5 14+ is what you want to see at the battery, running. (fully charged, resting with no load at 78* should be 12.7) The radio memory circuit or a dome light will bring that down.
Without a volt meter you can get a rough idea of your voltage by seeing how fast the blinker blinks.

Well I spent a good part of the day working on the Jeep with my son.
I checked the battery with an volt meter and it was at 12.22.
The starter was good when hooked up to my Toyota.
Had my son turn the key to start position on the Jeep and read the voltage
under neath the vehicle and it read only 11volts .
I installed the starter and charged the battery to the Jeep.
After an half hour the battery charger said it was at 90%.
I started the the Jeep up and check the battery with it running and it was at 11 volts and dropping.
The volt meter in the dash was dropping all the way down to red.
Went to town with the alternator and had O'Reilly's check it on their machine and it failed all three tests.
Got another alternator and will install it tomorrow, if it is nice out.
Got an life time guarantee and the starter for $95.
Had to get a good night sleep and slow down and thought about this whole thing.
My Jeep was telling me 2 days before it quit, that the battery wasn't charging, but did I listen...no.
The starter relay, starter, and battery were fine.
Originally my accessories all were not working because of the ignition switch...like you guys said.
Then only a few days later the alternator went bad.
Well I don't have a garage at this point, so since the weather is so nice, I don't mind working out doors on the Jeep.
It will be nice to drive the Jeep again to work on Monday.
Thanks! Cruiser54 and Flintstone (hope I got the name right).
No lost of faith here! John

Keep up the good work. Your nearing the finish line one little word of advise put the charger back on battery while swapping alternators. That way its fully charged when your done.
