1989 Laredo 4.0L-relay?
Hi!~All, my radio, wipers, turn signals, & heater fan, & clock are not working.
I have power going to the relay connected to the fuse box under the hood next to the battery.
When I turn the key towards me every thing works.
But when I start the engine, all these thing don't work.
What is that relay called...starter relay?
Any one ever have this happen?
Please let me know!~Thanks!~John

I'm thinking the Ign switch. Sounds like the brown wire is getting power on Acessory, but not on on. (maybe). The connector is known to get hot and mess up.

Thanks!~for the reply.
Are you talking about the key cylinder (ignition switch) in the column?
I just today found out that if I turn the key switch slowly to start, the power goes to the things that are not working.
But after the engine starts there is no power to the wipers, turn signals, clock and radio.
Like I said when you turn the key back towards me the power goes to everything.
I can get a new key clinder from O'Reillys because it is still under warranty.
It was replaced in 2011 or 2012.
Please let me know.
Thanks!~John
The relay is good...

So your saying the starter relay is good? No loose, cracked or disconnected wires? If that is all good then I would bet that you have a bad Ignition Switch(not to be confused with the lock key cylinder). A brown wire from the ignition switch sends power to everything you mentioned. So it sounds like its the switch I just don't recall on the '89 of its positioning, but it would be at one of 2 locations in the steering column itself right behind the lock key cylinder and will have wires connected to it. Or it should be bolted to the steering column below the dash it sits on the top side of the column mast and is connected to the key by a rod and a rack gear. Hope this helps.

1989 Laredo 4.0L- Relay?
Thanks!~Everyone, yes!~the relay is good. Checked the wires and cleaned & grounded. Plus tried another one (new) starter relay.
I took it back.
I will work on that tomorrow (ignition switch).
Is it better just to replace it or is there some repair to the brown wire?
Thanks!~John
Thanks!~for the Picture Cruiser54. You guys are great and I'd be lost.

I would just replace it, they aren't overly priced. A quick google search shows them starting at around 13.00 and up.

Replace the switch and re-do the connections.

Well I replaced the ignition switch.
My son took it a part and then got cold outside and I tried to put it back together.
Was never very good at putting things back together that someone else took a part.
He was sure it went in one way, but I told him it couldn't got that-way because there was no room to plug in the wiring harnesses.
After taking the whole instrument panel out I could see the top of the column.
I was putting it in upside down- crazy!
Was about ready to go back on line and ask you guys how to install the ignition switch, but I knew the steel rod went in the side of the switch, not in the bottom like my son thought.
And the project took so long that I just installed the switch and hooked up the battery to see if that was the problem....AND IT WAS.
The next day I put the dash together and everything is working fine now.
I use to be an auto mechanic in the 70's, but cars have sure changed a lot.
The use of my Craftsman little lighted impact sure helped get all those screws back in fast.
It was $10.31 for the ignition switch at O'Reilly Auto Parts and they had it in stock.
By the way I found my Chilton's Book, but I got more help from you guys.
Just have to install a new radio antenna now and every thing will be good.
Thank you! Very Much, John

Kind of slow there John. Next time he has a problem, we expect you to solve it sooner. Btw I have two nearly identical 90's. Other issues are up front, but one's s radio skunks the other.
Well done btw. , nice job!,,,,,,,,

1989 Laredo 4.0L-Relay?
Hi!~Thought that I was done with this problem...
As of Wednesday last week I drove home from work with what sounded like
the starter drive still engaged into the fly wheel.
Then on Friday night I tried to start the Jeep and it sounded terrible, so I
never started it. The problem is not the starter. I believe it's the ignition
switch again. MAYBE I DID SOMETHING WRONG.
The key cylinder doesn't turn back by itself any more, you have to turn it
back yourself or the starter stays engaged.
Is there any adjustment on the ignition switch or is the rod that goes down the column messed up some how or could it not be in the ignition switch right?
Thought I'd ask you guys before I take it all a part again.
I'm sure this had to happen to someone else.
Thanks!~John
