Hello i need some help. I bought a 89 xj that someone put a 94 4 l h.o. in. i love it. So the other day when i turned it started binding and jerking so i looked over the axle u joints, the steering the bushing and everything. I took out the front drive line and it stopped. so i figure it to be transfer case. it then made a gear type chain noise, i took off the linkage and it didnt help. i went to the local spaldings and got another 231 np. went to put it in and the one i got is 21 spline the one i pulled out was 23 spline. also the transfercase i pulled out has electronic speedo and a 2 prong wire going into the top ( I assume for the 4x4 indicator light) the one i bought was not the same on either of those. the part number on my old transfercase is 530 04301. i looked it up and it says it should be 21 spline with cable speedo. is this true. how hard is it to change the input shaft thing so i put my 23 spline in the newer transfercase? if i totally have to dismantle it is it easier to just rebild the one i have? i have decent mechanical skills and good tools. thank you for reading my "book" any help would be awesome thank you

 

91+ IIRC is the 23 spline with VSS, I would start with taking the older one apart if you feel comfotable with it, with it binding sounds like mabye the linkage was out of adjustment and in 4WD so its possible it is just a stetched chain. look in the write up section there is thread by FrankZ on how to upgrade the chain and planetary gears. http://www.novak-adapt.com/knowledge...nput_gears.htm Some good info here about these T/Cs good luck

 

also where can i order a rebuild kit for the 231 amc. i seen them on quadratech and another website. the price range is huge so is there like bad ones to buy and good ones to buy? thanks guys i a new jeep owner. i came from a 79 ford 150.
