Default 1987 Cherokee XJ - Specific Vacuum Line Question

Does anyone happen to know if this is correct or okay? I just spotted a vacuum line that just loops around and feeds back into the Vacuum Manifold. I got the car not too long ago and I'm having an issue with the CCV which I'm fixing soon but curious about this specific line. I believe the rest are mapped correctly but I have to take a closer look at Cruiser's vacuum map.

Thanks!

The line in question follows the yellow drawn line.

Wow, what a mess. Hard to tell with the angle of your pic but my guess is the EGR solenoid on the driver side inner fender by the ballast resistor. Is your EGR still there?

I have to check, I'll let you know. If there is no EGR, could this just be the solution after removing it?

I'm going to work on the CCV this week. The more I poked around last week on it, the worse things I saw lol. I've ordered parts for the full Vacuum Manifold per Cruisers guide. I found many cracks and horribly fitting hoses.

Is it a big deal if there is no EGR? Sorry for the simple question, I'm new to the XJ world. I just got mine not 2 weeks ago.

No worries. If you are subject to emissions testing where you live, then Yes. Your EGR needs to be intact and functional. If not subject to smog testing, it doesn't hurt if it's plugged off or removed with a block plate installed in it's place. As for the "loop", if the ends are connected to the opposite sides of same port, then it doesn't really do anything. The big block is just a junction for the 2 manifolds.

Definitely refer to Cruiser's site and start working through the tips.

Thanks man! I'm in NC so cars that are older than 30 years old don't have to pass inspection. I think that's the hose that was throwing me off. Everything else seems like it's going where it's supposed to but some of the hard plastic tubing is brittle and cracking.

Is that a newer engine installed in your XJ? The valve cover is the newer style. It takes a plastic PCV like this.

There is no ball and spring in it, just an orifice.

I'm honestly not sure... I have very little history on the car. It has 170k miles and lived in Tennessee and Virginia and then I purchased in North Carolina.

What can I look for to determine if this isn't the original engine?

I've gone ahead and purchased the parts linked in Cruisers tips so I'll be trying those out. The CCV as far as I can tell works the same way.

One thing that I found out when touching these tubes is that the gold elbow you see in the pic on the top of the valve cover has a screw on spiral but the engine doesn't. It looks poorly DIY'ed and there is evidence of them using some sort of rubber sealant to keep that elbow in there.

I guess it doesn't matter what year the engine is, but the valve cover is the newer style. The original valve cover is cast aluminum not stamped steel. The part that I linked to is what you should use to replace the brass pipe fittings that are connected to the valve cover.

The one you linked to is for the top intake right? I see it's the one with the small hole. The intake to the valve cover shouldn't have a whole, it should be a straight elbow joint.

If you mean the top fitting in the picture, then yes, that is the correct part. The bottom fitting is the fresh air fitting from the air filter box and has no restriction. The top fitting connects to the intake manifold and has an orifice (small hole).

Thanks for your help

I see the hose routing of the CCV system on your engine is the same as it is on my 2001 XJ.

It's s a different layout but the connections are the same.
