Can you be more specific about trouble adjusting the carburetor?
the electronic choke I adjust it closed while the engine is cold idle well but right after I hit the throttle it starts to slowly die with black smoke coming from the exhaust, I have it adjusted tight now to where it's almost open so I get some hard cold starts but right after it starts I gotta stay on the throttle for about 4_5 mins then it starts to idle on it's own, the guys who had said they rebuilt the carb I think they just took it apart and put it back without any adjustments
Assuming that you are correct, that the carb is not freshly rebuilt, my advise would be to rebuild it (if possible) before continuing to try to tune it.
The 4x4 on those should be able to be engaged by pulling the transfer case lever into 4hi at any speed below 55. (Personally, I usually put it into 4hi under 10mph.) When you disengage, simply drop the lever back to 2wd. (When I disengage, I usually back up about 10 feet to allow the system to come out. I don't think you have to, but that's the way he taught me on his Jeep).
Start reading as much info on here as you can about your Jeep. The 2.8 is a little different than the Jeep 4.0

that's the plan now from what I've been reading my jeep isn't really popular amongst the cool kids with 4.0 but with 172 miles on it I thought I give it s try I seen empty pockets 2.8 build that thing is a beast
Thanks for the help red
The 2.8 isn't a bad engine if you are just going to use it around town, like a DD. If you go through the truck, fix any smaller problems, and change fluids, it should last you a long time.
Hell, for $800, and then maybe $700 in parts, fluids, odds and ends, you can end up with a pretty decent truck for $1500

that's what I thought I just see alot of them be put down I'm doing just that took it for a spin and had a water leak turned out to be the water pump after that I'm rebuilding the carb keeps you posted red
Just found a 38d gas weber for 70 bucks just the carb I've heard guys on here switching the Rochester for one of these. What I was wondering is if it will be a bolt on replacement or will I need an adapter
Hi! I am a new member, also with an '86 pioneer with the 2.8L engine. Got it last summer and have put about 15k miles on it since then. Have had a bunch of interesting problems and fixes, and was in northern NH all winter - definitely know what you are talking about giving gas for 4-5 minute when its cold. I am about to start rebuilding the carb (I have the Rochester 2SE) and will make a little thread.
I know this is several months old now, but check this if you haven't already: when you put the gas in, before you cold start, check that the choke is closing and the fast idle screw is resetting to the highest step of the fast idle cam. Sometimes takes a couple pushes for mine to set properly. If your's isn't resetting to the high step bc of adjustments you have made, you can reach in, move the throttle back slightly, and push the fast idle cam down by hand. then start it - a couple of times if necessary - without touching the gas again.
Love me some V6 Cherokee, 1st one was an 85 Pioneer. Smooth runner. I miss that rig.
You fellas know to keep a close eye on your coolant level ? Low coolant / overheat was a problem in early 2.8 that killed a bunch. Improved gaskets came about to fix that.
Alright so I got a 1985 Jeep pioneer 5 speed 4x4 it’s all stock and I recently bought it for 400$ it sat for 2 years and the last owner said there was nothing wrong with it when they parked it but obviously from it sitting it needs some love to get back on its feet. When I first started it, it didn’t wanna stay at a normal idle. It would go from 10 rpms to 20 and just sat and bounced in between. So I adjust the idle a little bit and now it stays idle at a constant rpm of 18-20. But anytime I press the gas it bogs out and then when I go fully to the floor it drives like what seems like it’s supposed to. Also my oil gage sits at 80 always
First of all, the accelerator pump piston is probably dried out and not working very well which is causing the bog. It's designed to shoot fuel into the carb when the throttle plate just opens so it doesn't go lean. Another common problem is running rich on cold startup because the vacuum break piston has dried out and doesn't work. That's designed to pull the choke plate open a small amount so it doesn't load up.
The oil pressure sending unit needs to be replaced.
