1 guy and a cylinder head. ouch!
I have an 86 2.8, 5 speed, approaching 300k miles, runs like a champ. I bought it for $100 from a guy who told me the water pump was bad and needed a starter. I replaced the starter, water pump, hoses, belts and thermostat about three years ago and it's been my daily driver since.
Got in and headed home from work tonight, got about 10 miles down the road and noticed steam coming from the hood. Overtemp light never came on. Pulled over to take a look. Opened the radiator cap and found it was bone dry. My first thought was that I had blown a hose. Nope hoses intact. Got some water from a home nearby and started down the road again. Got another 10 miles and same thing. Pulled into a gas station opened the cap, dry again. Got the hose and started filling with engine running. Could see good flow but level dropped fast. Checked underneath and it looked like the Niagra at the drivers side near the tranny. I'm thinking blown head gasket.

You can deglaze a cylinder with 400 grit sandpaper, it should also take miner rust off, use a back and forth motion parallel to the cylinder, DO NOT go up and down in the cylinder, use nothing more coarse than 400 grit.

You should be able to see deposits are the leaky drain plugs but if you replace one, replace them all. They're rather easy to repair, just punch a screw driver thru them and rip them out then press the new ones in
