Default 1-2 gear on shift select

On my new to me 98 classic when I put the shifter in 1-2 it stays in 1st. Should go into 2nd right? Its a 4.0 w/ selec-trac.
Any ideas or am I doing something wrong?

How high are you revving? Under WOT it will almost tach out. Under light throttle it will shift like 4k+

4K? Wow that high. I was really just getting it up to prob 2-2.5 and holding it there w/ no load. Didn't shift under those conditions. I'll try letting it rev a little higher next time I'm in it.

Haha ALOL. yea... You have an anvil under your hood. Ever seen a broken or unreliable anvil? Nope. Me neither. NOT! That revving the **** outta your 4.0 is recommended, but if it came from the factory with those shift points, your good to go!

Anvil! Haha! The 4.0 is new to me but pretty bullet proof I hear .
Are the shift points in 1-2 different from when you are in 3rd or drive? Certainly shifts well before in other gear selections unless I'm stomping on it or going uphill etc?

Im pretty sure you could have searched this. There have been plenty threads about it. It will not shift until it hits redline, which I don't recommend. Only use that position if you have a very heavy load and need it to shift at a higher point. Just leave it in drive and don't worry about it. A switch can be added to manually shift it into 2nd, but I would just leave it alone unless you absolutely need to shift it, like when going down a steep grade where you don't want to burn up the brakes.

Hmm I've been all over this site and did not see this anywhere. Found just about everything else I needed.

Not really something I want or need to use, just going over the truck trying to make sure everything is in order and getting to know it.

Also I did the adjustment with the button near throttle (forget what its called) and was wondering if I messed it up.

Kick down cable is the name. How'd you adjust it? Also, there's this totally BA manual shifter override that I've heard is the bees knees! I'll post the link on here in a sec..
Well this is as close as I can get to finding it. Someone on here has one and reportedly loves it!

Simple, pressed the release button and pushed the cable housing in (toward psg side). Released button then opened throttle to wide open. Made a racheting sound and that is supposed to do it. It made a small difference in driveability but I don't think I was way out. I've heard others rave after getting theirs into proper adjustment.

Was wondering if somehow I could have done it wrong but I don't think so.

Sounds right. How did you go WOT? By twisting at the TB or pressing the gas pedal? Might not make a difference, but worth trying maybe?

Did it with the TB. The 'ratcheting" was a little tight though, did not work freely so to speak. Didn't think much of it since I never did one before, figured that's how they are. I wonder if I should hit it with some teflon spray and try again.
