Default 0331 Cylinder head

Did a quick search and can't find my answer.

Can you tell what head an XJ has by VIN number? Only reason I ask is I'm about to finally buy my first Jeep, a 2001 Sport, and I know some had the 0331 head with cracking issues. At current time I have the VIN number and can't actually check the head for the casting number.

Also, maybe they all had the 0331 head?

Thanks guys n gals! Either way I can't wait to drive my new to me Jeep home!

Late 2001 had the newer casting installed on them ridding the cracking issue.

I'll have to check the casting number then! Is there any way to tell by the VIN though?

Required reading for anyone with an 00-01 or anyone considering buying one.

To know if an 0331 head is one of the good (revised) ones, you must look for the word TUPY cast into the head between cylinders 3-4. TUPY is the Brazilian foundry that manufactured the revised head for Jeep.

Default Cracked head

I had the same issue with the head cracking between the 3rd and 4th cylinders. Got everything put back together with another head and now I have a rough idle. Also getting low oil through pushrods on front half of motor and non on back half

As this thread is from 2011, you'd have the best luck with starting a new thread and a more specific title.
