Default 02 sensor male end insulation just disapeared?

I have a 96 xj and randomly one day it just started running horribly studdering etc. and when I checked it out about 3/4 of an inch of the male end of the 02 sensor are just gone and bare wire was exposed so temporarily I electrical taped it and everythings running as normal. but the check engine lights on reading high voltage O2 sensor I'm just wondering what would be a permanent fix for this because I can't seem to find a male end connector to splice in.

Unhook your battery for 10 minutes, hook it back up and drive for a bit to see if the code pops back up. Are you sure the wiring/connector didn't get up against the exhaust?

was it the after-cat sensor? The wiring on mine came lose from the body and started rubbing on the driveshaft, causing exactly the symptoms you're having.

When you ground out the wiring, it will often blow fuses. Check your O2 fuse to make sure it's not blown, then reset the code and see if it comes back.
