Thx for the update!!!
My 01 has been doing the same. I will use the starter fluid trick to check for leaks. Just curious though, how bad was the gasket to change? Any tips or links to how tos? Thanks.

That gasket is a pain. Get assorted extensions and a wobble joint for a ratchet, ratcheting-type box wrenches are good too. You've got to get the power steering pump aside, air box out, and remove the intake manifold. If you're going in there you might as well do motor mounts. Would be a good time to check your exhaust manifold to see if it's cracked!

My whistle comes and goes. Never constant. Usually only last a short time and it has never done it when I have been at home and able to try and pinpoint it. I am also getting 20-22MPG. Does it still sound like this same problem to you guys? I would think I would get crappy gas mileage with a vaccuum leak? Any other suggestions? Thanks guys.

I think what salad is pointing out is with the manifold off, the mount that predictably breaks is right there under your nose. Mines broken btw.
In post #3, I mention checking/tightening the manifold bolts...maybe a place to start.

Going to have it smoked on Thursday to be exact where Im getting a leak at. Figured for thirty bucks its worth it to save time. I will probably fix the problems myself once they pinpoint it.
Where is the exhaust manifold usually cracked at? Can it be seen by the naked eye? Would this show up on the smoke test as well? Just trying to get all my info straight so I know what Im talking about when I go in. Thanks guys.

This was very helpful. Seems like it's possible for an intermediate.
