01 XJ Compression test #s Do I need a new engine?
I was talking to my father in law he knows more about motors then I do he said just throw a new head on there and run it. Compression was all about the same in each and with a new head an head gasket it might help bring the numbers up?

Ill try that next. We put it up on the lift today and checked it out to see what else it might need to pass inspection it started right up no smoke no stage noises or anything and drive it right into the shop. It needed minor things like new pads and rotors, and one of the ubolts on the passenger side was missing a bolt and one of the exhaust hangers needed to be tacked back in place. Other than that it was rust free and looked good. So I think ill take it home to put new brakes and fix the bolt weld the exhaust back in place. Then pull the head and see if I can get someone to tell me what I'm looking at to see if its good or not. There has to be a video on youtube to help me everything is on youtube.

Start PB-ing all the exhaust and manifold nuts and anything that you're going to take off that looks rusty.
There's a bunch of good videos out there. I think the 2 guys who joke around were good. Forgot their names, one was an Asian guy.
I'm sure others will chime in.
Normally, the bolts should be un-torqued in sequence, but...
NM it's good practice anyway.

Yes its 0331 Head and yes there was oil in the antifreeze and when I check the oil on the dipstick it was brown and milky. I didn't watch the test compression test but he did offer to show me. I'm going back tomorrow he's going to put it up on the lift so I can look at the undercarriage for rust so I can ask him to show me. It looks totally rust free from everything I can see. I just wanted to get a better look before I decide to dump a few grand into a motor.
I've used the shop for other things for years and everyone in my town uses (really small town) him so he seems pretty trustworthy from what I've ever dealt with him on. I guess before I give him 3000 I just was trying to make sure my ducks are in a row since I really dont know much about motors.

You could absolutely put a new head on there. Although, some things to consider.
- With the new head, will the head have tighter tolerances than the bottom end? If so, you could be looking at blowby past the piston rings, this blowby could blow oil into your airfilter housing and dirty up the airfilter, throttle body, combustion chamber, foul sparkplugs faster, shorten the life of the Oxygen sensors, and shorten the life of the cataltic converters. This is a worst case scenario.
- Did water (coolant / antifreeze) get into the bearings? If so, this will shorten the life of the engine.
So, let's say you put a new cylinder head on it.
- How much is that in parts and labor?
- Now, let's say you find out the bottom end of the engine is junk. How much is it to pull the engine & transfer your "new" cylinder head to a new bottom end, and reinstall?
If your FIL is committed to helping you work on the Jeep, to include replacing the cylinder head & potentially pulling the engine, that might be a better option. Then you could learn a thing or two, save a little bit of money & have a bonding beer experience with your FIL.
Personally, I like the 3 year / 100,000 mile warranty provided by Jasper. Maybe there are better warranties out there? Is the warranty transferable to a new owner? This might be a good selling point. Maybe find out what this covers, if their engine fails in that time period. Car rental? Hotel, if out of town? Oil? Coolant? What will be on your dime, if the engine were to fail.
If you are going to drive it, Keep as much water / coolant / antifreeze out of the crankcase as you can.
He was mostly kidding mostly lol..... he lives by the philosophy run it til it dont run no more then fix it enough to run it a little longer. Then when you cant fix it anymore replace it and start over. BUT hes also meticulous about proper maintenance so he can run it as long as possible. His YJ has over 400k miles on it. The body is rusting out under him but it still runs well.
The warranty part is the only reason im still struggling with the choice. 5 yrs unlimited mileage is standard and for 200 mmore its 7 years. thats why my mechanic said he put one inhis office managers jeep he said he could have rebuilt it but for the cost and the time it took to get the engine (3 days) the warranty couldn't be beat.
