Searched and found nothing pertaing to what Im hearing from a trusted mechanic. So my jeep has an intermitant tea kettle whistle that I have been trying to chase down. From a previous thread I was thinking it was going to be the intake. Had it smoked today for leaks. Smoking it revealed a bad Throttle body gasket and a leak at the shaft going into the TB where the throttle cables are hooked too. Gasket was replaced and the whistle was still present. He pulled the TB off and smoked the rest of the engine and found no more leaks. Is the leaky shaft for the cables a common problem? Could this be the cause of my whistle. He did not want to change the TB since he was not sure it would elimnate the whistle. Said best bet was to spray it with carb cleaner while it was whistling and see if it stopped it. Problem is it very rarely whistles at idle. Gonna have to catch it on the right day at the right time I guess. Any other info or ideas? Thanks guys.
Throttle body shafts are a fairly common leak point, they use bushings and eventually they wear. I've never changed them in a Jeep throttle body but have done quite a few of the old GM TBI's and assume the concept would be similar- drill out the old and replace. Or upgrade to a newer TB.
A bit of grease packed on the shaft where it enters the bushings should seal it up long enough to go for a short drive to see if the whistle disappears.

Good idea. I will have to try that.
Forgot to mention he said the mechanics forum he was on mentioned maybe pvc valve? I looked at mine and the top piece that seals to the valve cover is cracked. Going to order a new one of those as well.

Get the valve cover grommet too, often the whole thing crumbles when you take it apart. Heat+ oil = disintegrated plastic.

Got em both coming my way. Love RockAuto. Little over $7 for both pieces shipped to my door. Local Advance wanted more than that for just the PVC and had to order it as well. I am going to replace that and throw a can of carb cleaner in the jeep and see if I can catch it whistling while Im stopped sometime. Thanks.
I'm having the same issue on my 2001. It does a tea kettle whistle only when driving. Looks like its coming from the back of the motor near firewall. I thought it might be a a bad gasket.
wondering if there was any conclusion to your whistling...mine wont do it while idling, only driving.

Still chasing mine down. Hopefully have some free time this weekend so I can try the carb cleaner trick to check for leaks. Will let you know what I find.

Had time to really poke around under the hood tonight. Sprayed down everything with carb cleaner and got no engine rev. Checked out all the hoses and only found one that was cracked. Its on a canister by the firewall on the passenger side. Anyone tell me what this part is so I know what to look for, for parts. Pic below. Spraying this hose with carb cleaner had no affect on the idle so not sure its the problem but it still needs replaced. I also looked over all the intake/exhaust bolts I could see and none looked loose. I may pull the airbox and check them with a wratchet this weekend. Not sure what else to check or do at this point.

Wow, talk about procrastination! One year later and it finally bothered me enough to pull the air box and tighten all the intake bolts. While none seemed too loose the jeep does whistle less and at a different frequency now. That being said, makes me pretty sure I need a new intake/exhaust gasket. Any recommendations on brand or hints/tips.

I always try to post the results for people in the future who search. Can't tell you how many post I read when I was dealing with this problem where nobody reported back what fixed it!
Did it myself. Part was only $20. Took 3.5 hours (30 minutes trying to find where that bolt landed I just dropped in the engine bay. Lol)
