I have this same problem. I noticed today its leaking from where the shaft is inserted into the transmission. I'll post pictures tomorrow. How do you take the shaft out to replace the ring seal?

You're talking about your rear trans seal...

Replacement is easy... Put a mark on the driveshaft and on the pinion yoke to line them back up later, unbolt the pinion u-joint, drop the driveshaft, then pull the yoke and everything out. Pull the old seal out, clean the area, tap the new seal in place. Line up your marks on the u-joint & pinion yoke, and slide the driveshaft in and bolt the u-joint down.

Before you insert the driveshaft tho, coat the seal with some trans fluid, and do the same on the trans yoke...

Default How to fix this seal

Someone said this is my transfer case. ... This is the back of my transmission right?

My guess is that I need to replace the busing and the seal ... and possibly the housing because I had someone replace the seal a couple of times already.

How do I reference the transmission so that I can get parts for it?

That's the transmission. 2WD's don't have a Transfer Case...

Default Thanks and steps to repair rear seal and bushing on transmission

Ok, thought it was but had someone desperately trying to convince me that it had a transfer case so I was doubting myself.

Do I have the steps below to replace the seal and the bushing correct?

To fix the seal and the bushing I would ...
1. Paint reference marks on the joint, drive shaft and housing so I can line it up again. Place pan underneath to catch fluid.
2. Remove drive shaft by removing the bolts holding the drive shaft to the differential.
3. Put a jack under the transmission to support it(please suggest where ... on oil pan?)
4. remove cross member
5. remove sensor connectors - (do I need to remove just the wires or do I need to pull the sensor out?)
6. undo bolts to tail housing (shown in photo)
7. Replace bushing and seal (need more details)

Do I need any special parts to remove the bushing and seal?
I have been told the bushing is sometimes hard to line up, how does one line up the bushing?

Thanks in advance for the help. I am hoping the steps will help someone else. I think "1000Jeep" has the same problem as I do with his rear trany seal.

Under the pan is good, just be sure and put a piece of wood between the jack and the pan to spread the load across the whole pan. And you might be able to just unbolt the trans mount from the crossmember and trans, and work like that. I'd say since you're in there, check/replace the mount...

Thanks - good tips. The mount seems good. I lifted the whole transmission with a screw driver to see if the rubber was cracking or anything.

Do I need any special tools to get the bushing out?

Do I need to align the bushing any certain way?

I'll be keeping a close eye on this thread. My tranny is leaking just the littlest bit from that rear seal, so I'm probably gonna have to do this soon as well. Alot of good info so far!

Thanks bmp120,

I do also have this exact same issue. I would like to see the outcome of your work so I can start tackling mine.

Thanks for the contributions everyone!

Hi guys. I talked with bowtieguys offline and got some more information. I plan on repairing the leak Wednesday and will post photos shortly after. I found the parts locally although one has to bring them in to match one of three parts.

For reference I have an Asan Warner transmission.

If your timeframe is shorter ... these were the answers to my questions from a previous post with a little translation.
1. Getting a seal/bushing puller is beneficial
2. Getting the bushing aligned is more like putting a quarter down a tube to where it stays perpendicular to the tube all the way down. So it is alignment that way and not making sure it is rotated a particular way.

Default A little delay

For those of you waiting on my posting. Due to scheduling a second car to run to the transmission parts store while the car is down I have had to delay my repair; however, it is will probably happen next week.

Default more delay

For those of you monitoring this thread. I have been out of town and just got back. I am having some more immediate issues with my car that need to be taken care of first. I imagine it will be another 2 weeks before I tackle this issue.

I have this same leak on my 2001. I cant see any pics at work if there is any.. but mine has a small cup around where the yoke/driveshaft meets the rear of the transmission. I leave a small puddle every night.. Anyone know if this can be fixed?? I see the last post to this thread was still pending completion?? Anyone ran into this..
