So I recently bought a '00 jeep cherokee SE with 78k miles sight unseen. When l got it, it had a check engine light with codes p0161, p0138, p0158, p0455, p0132, p0152, p0141. I know that these are all related to the O2 sensors. When i got under the car, the previous owner did a o2 delete and got rid of any traces of the o2 sensors or holes for them. Since I am in ny, how many o2 sensors do i need to tap and drill in order to fix this issue and where?
Any help with diagrams or pictures of locations of o2 sensors would be great help. For the life of me i cant figure out if i need 2 or 4 o2 sensors or what kind of exhaust system.
The 2000 came two ways. Some had 4 o2 sensors (2 upstream and 2 downstream), and others had 2 (1 upstream and 1 downstream). If i have it right, you have a code for bank 1 sensor 1, and bank 2 sensor 1, so its a 4 sensor setup. Which would be this...
I looked and i think i have the original headers which do not have a cat on them and I dont see any o2 holes in the header. So am I correct to assume that I don't have the california emissions jeep? So where is the hole for the upstream o2 on the header?

So thinking if you have a Federal Emissions '00 then you have one of these.
Now this is aftermarket so it may not be set up exactly as yours.
Somewhere downstream of the flange on that pipe you should see your upstream.
Downstream will be behind the Cat.
The white sticker on the firewall will tell you which emissions you have.
i took some pictures to help give you guys an idea. i dont know how the pig tail from the parking shifter o2 can reach the post cat. seems too short. am i missing some wire? the front connectors that come out near the power steering I dont see a hole for a upstream o2 2nd plug near firewall the cat. seems to me previous owner deleted the o2 hole with that double joint pipe. no hole here last black o2 pigtail around that area. how does it reach to the other side to the post cat?
First of all you have a CA Emissions '00.
So the picture that fb97xj1 showed is what you should have there.
Which would explain why the O2 sensor wires don't reach.
Now I can't see the whole header but thinking that is one you would find on a '99 and down.
Also if that is the case makes me wonder if somebody swapped out the head.
The whole 0331 cracked head in '00 and '01 XJ's thing.
I believe that heads are marked around the edge somewhere where the valve cover meets the head.
You can see it with the valve cover on.
Any chance you can find a number?
Be 4 digits. 0331, 0630, etc.
Based on this picture, i think the owner switched out the head with a 0630 and 99 exhaust header, plugged up the o2 sensors since MA does not require emissions on 2000 or earlier. Anything to worry about with this change? how do i find the vin on the engine or see if it was swapped in. Do i need to do the head gasket?
I don't how to specifically identify an engine. I don't think they have the VIN on the block.
You would have to research that.
Seeing how you have the coil rail I am going with the lower end being original.
Seeing how you are in NY and they kinda play by CA rules now for emissions I am
thinking that you are going to have to jump through some hoops to set that right and pass.
thank you all for the help. i found a seller that will sell me the 4 o2 sensor header. Will it bolt on to the 0630 head or do i need to do something different?
Basically what it says is that the exhaust ports on the 0630 head are bigger then the 0331 head that came on that Jeep.
So the dual front cat will not cover the exhaust ports. and you will have a leak. So that is where that adapter comes into play.
This will require removing the intake manifold too.
Now since the 0630 head does not have the bolt holes for the coil rail the PO must have rigged up something already for the coil rail.
Like they talk about at the link. Also thinking that you will have to rework at least some of the exhaust from the dual cat back.
No idea what the PO did so you will have to work that out.
Also hopefully the O2 connectors on the wiring harness are still there. Not there to see so no idea what the PO did.
Okay, The 2000 CA emission setup is cast iron split exhaust headers with 2 small cats, 02 sensors (4) before and after them, a flange from the header after the cats into an exhaust pipe with a non-monitored cat under the car, muffler and tailpipe. Each of the 02 plugs is unique in that they will not fit anything except the sensor that is supposed to go there and the sensors are expensive. They are also heated electrically. My 2000 lost it's downstream converter but passes inspection fine without it. You are in luck finding a complete manifold/cat system in good condition and ever better if the sensors work. You can keep the 0630 head, but an adapter is necessary. The exhaust ports in an 0331 head are tiny compared to the 0630 head. It's a shame to choke it like that. I think the main reason for the 0331 head cracking is the exhaust restriction and extreme heating of those 2 center exhaust valves caused by the small ports and cast manifolds. That plus the "waste spark" system was done to lower emissions for the newer standards. I believe it was 1997 when NYS decided all new cars sold in NY had to meet CA emission standards.
Later down the road, you may want to switch to a Clearwater or TUPY head.
One thing I noticed is you're going to need to have the exhaust pipe flange changed to a 3-bolt flange to mate with the CA header system.
Hello all, just wanted to update you all on the thread so in the future if someone has questions, they can look at this. So I was successful at locating an exhaust with headers and cats from a CA compliant 2001 car with 4 o2 sensors for $150. Bought the adapter plate, new exhaust gaskets for 0331 and 0630 and bolted them on. The guy that i bought the exhaust from also let me take the triple flange connector with some pipe. Added a flex pipe to the rest of the exhaust and I am up and running with 0 check engine lights. Now to title the car and pass emissions but this covid is causing a delay in that in NYC.
Thank you all for your help. Those exhaust bolts under the intake are a pain in the ***. God it took a solid hour to get them in blind. Good thing 2 of the 4 bolts i put on before putting on the intake using them as a guide.
Funny you should mention the Covid crisis. NY State let people pass on inspections until later. My XJ needed inspection in February and I didn't get it ready to pass until last week, just because I didn't bother to. Actually, I've been chasing an evap leak and needed to catch it after all but that one monitor had set to get it to pass. At the end I was driving it watching live data on the monitors to catch it right. I needed a valid sticker to re-register it in July.
