I know that the key above the 4 is the dollar sign key but is there a cent key on a standard keyboard that I am missing?
Another question that I am in the dark about is what the function keys are used for on a standard keyboard. Must be a microsoft related question and if you need to know to answer it, I have XP. Thanks in advance to anyone who knows these answers.

Try searching your computer for something called "character map". That has all the characters that you can use on a keyboard with their keystrokes (and more). I forgot exactly where it is since I do not have XP.

Thanks Draken I found the character map but was hopeing to assign a key as the cent key, but don't see how that is possible. There is a description of how to use the Unicode and num/loc keys depressed and then use the numerical keypad to insert it in a document. I want to be able to use it more frequently than that. So I guess it can't be easily done.
What about the function keys. Do they serve a purpose?

I used to work at a Hospital and their computers were programmed to use the function keys for special applications inside certain programs, but that may have been related to the programs themselves. For instance the F3 key would bring up a list of lab tests that could be ordered on a particular colored vial top sample. Red top could be used to do tests X, Y & Z but not D, E or F.
Does that help at all?

Blue go to start menu, to help and support,to accessibility,to windows shortcut overview,to general keyboard shortcuts, this lists all function keys and what they do. Looks like not all the function keys are used. Hope this helps. Also check out the other keyboard shortcuts there.

F1 opens help, F11 makes internet explorer full screen, F5 clears the cookies for the current page you are on and reloads fresh ones, F10 moves your cursor to the menu bar, F3 opens a box to search for a string of text on your internet explorer, F4 opens your browsing history in your addy bar, F6 highlights your favorites menu
