long story, friend bought the jeep, when he collected it, he it drove it home(40miles) via motorway in 4wd, brought it to my place and asked me to take a look, he was complaining of a bad smell and whine from diff which started half way home (the diff smoked for a good hour!)anyway he got his money back and i liked the jeep so much i bought it. anyway i bought another axle off ebay but when i compared them mines got abs and the replacement hasnt ( anybody want to buy a non abs axle?) i began to strip the axle this weekend. the main gear is burred on the leading edge and starting across the top of the teeth. funnily enough the rest of the gears seem fine but ive not inspected them fully yet. i suspect the transfer box may also be goosed (is it meant to leak oil when the prop comes out) so thats gonne need a look as well. Im well and truly up the creek until i find an axle, so any help would be gratefully accepted
cheers

i do believe it was a np231 but havent checked yet. whatever it is it stank the car up for weeks and now only occasionally changes drive successfully if you are patient and persistant (im hoping an oil change and setting the selectors up may help cos its quiet, but im not too optimistic) anyway back on track. has anybody out there got an abs axle for sale. ive just had a thought will the diff from my non abs axle fit in my abs axle or is that just opening up another can of poo!!!
