5 speed ecu needed
He's referring to the OEM Number - which should be on a label on the front of the unit.
However, per Hollander, you should be able to drop in any other 1993XJ/6-242/5-speed ECU without any difficulty. I have not (yet) found any caveats for the swap.

When i swapped the ECU in the wife's ZJ it was dependant upon the points you mention and the inclusion or lack of Security System. Maybe XJ is different?

well as far as i can see it look like some one put black paint on the sticker on the box, unless its just a casing thats around the pcm/ecm/ecu what ever you shall call it. i have no alarm,i have crank windows, 5 speed, of course 4wd, 4.0 h/o engine, im guessing just a standard Cherokee thats 2 door. i just wish my jeep would run good... ='(

Factory Alarm? Perhaps - but I haven't seen any notes in Hollander as of yet. I'm not done digging, tho.

So I did an old trick and used a flat head on the tag n lghtly scratched the tag n it looks to say 5602 in small font and next to it 356.. Also I was messing around while the hood was up n reved it and they it shut down on me like it always does. When it finnally shut down, the computer made a high pitch tone. The box just to make sure it is the pcm/ecu is the square black box with what would be a taperd corner next to the filter box.
