So in the process of converting my 27 spline chrysler 8.25 to 29 spline, I did not realize that the carrier to ring gear bolts were reverse threads! So naturally I snapped one of the bolts off and wrecked my old ring gear. Spent hours trying to get it out. Just couldn't. So I put it all back together with just nine bolts and adjusted backlash to .006. Temporary fix. Drove great no noise at all. Couple days later I went to a junkyard and found another original ring gear with the same factory part number and bought it. I know you should not mix and match ring and pinions no matter what but I like to experiment and really didnt feel like messing with the pinion and crush sleeves. So I put the next ring gear in and adjusted backlash to .006 again and it works great! Pattern looked good too. It does however have an ever so slight hollow whine sound(sounds like you are driving on an open grate bridge) when coasting between 45 and 60mph. Obviously it's because the gears have tons of miles on them and never wore together. Why it only does it on the coast side and not on the drive side I don't know. I don't have a question I'm just posting this to those who wonder about it. I'll update this thread if the noise gets worse or goes away.

My factory gears make that sound and they've been together for 200k miles.

300 miles later the noise sounds the same but nothing broke yet and still no vibrations.

Figured I would update this. About 30,000 miles later it's still going strong. Noise is extremely quiet but still there.

In theory, hypoid gears do not wear very much. They are case-hardened, so if there is any wear at all, it's all downhill from there as you're down to soft metal. So I am not surprised there are no changes after 30K.

Thanks for the update. Am having what I thought was pinion whine, but discovered floorboard leaks. Fixed them and the whine went away. So, .....

Great update, thanks!! I stupidly bought an XJ with a noisy Dana 35, on the agreement that the seller would change the diff out, which hasn't eventuated. He has sent me another ring and pinion which I'm tempted to put in, but really don't have the tools or time to do it properly and *if* it's just the ring that's missing a tooth, I'm considering changing that only.

What was your overall feeling on the exercise? Would you mix and match again?
