i am the original owner of a 1986 cherokee chief 2.8l v6 4x4. my rig has 264,000miles on the stock 2.8l. the torqueflight auto trans is junk and needs rebuilds every 30k. get a 93-95 camaro 3.4l engine for $100 on craigslist(block is the exact same-bolt in). just as fast as the 4.0's

ok well ive decided to wait for a newer XJ for 2 reasons....the dana 30 disco axle (easy fix, but dont want to do it) and the gutless 2.8L V6 under the hood. it limits what i can swap in due to the firewall being about 3" forward so the 4.0 is outta the question, so the hunt continues!!!
