But your XJ comes set up with a solid front axle and that's jeep's ace in the whole - indeed, an XJ is a great all-round SUV! But my 5'-3" wife doesn't want me to lift mine any higher. Fortunately, shelf roads with a modest lift are enough to scare my grandchildren!

I'd love to have a 3rd or 4th gen 4runner. However I'm not rich enough to build it how I'd want. I see you're from Nor Cal... How far north are you? Lots of fun places up by me.

I'm in Sacramento, but we wheel all over the state. To put 40's on his Toy, he ran a tube frame all the way through the roof to form an exoskeleton. Heavy Ford solid axels front & rear - the thing was a beast and almost too wide for most trails. Things like this should arrive on a trailer - but it was his daily driver. Our XJ is FAR more practical running to the grocery store .

As for the head... SHHHHH it's the 0331.
I have a 0331 head too. The word on the street is if they haven't cracked by 100k, they are okay.

What shackles are you using?

I have a good buddy out of Chico that now runs 54s on his toyotas. AND they are DOT tires! I use to drive my 4runner to trails, however it got to the point it was so beaten to **** it wasn't fun on long pavement drives. I built this XJ to be dailyable while still limiting issues that come up when hitting trails.

Sorry for the long wait on response, Got sick and then work grind.

Hopefully that word on the street is true!

As for the shackles, they are the ones that came with the BDS kit.

Thanks! I'm pretty happy with keeping it within a rough budget even with "project Creep". What are you planning?

I refused to have a jeep with bad steering geometry, especially since I was right there working on it all.

Indeed, keeping on the street with a lift and tires is a compromise. But the consolation is only having to buy chrome-molly axles in your Dana 30, rather then a new differential. Just add 1/2 a degree of caster for every inch of lift and tracking down the highway is sooooooooo much more comfortable. Unfortunately, the wind noise from square window moldings in an XJ can drown out a flow-master exhaust. But a healthy power amp can solve that!
