I still like my idea of moving to Florida if mine gives up the ghost. My back and neck got to hurting just viewing 5-speed'd pics!

GLAD I got rid of the '79 Bronco I had then. H/C was just starting to leak.

I learned the 302 runs just fine with intermittently low coolant levels

And thanks to the PO, I found out the C4 trans can run just fine without fluid for 2,000 miles and then behave perfectly when you fill it up

Lol... Been there. If you don't mind a word of experience with that trans though. Don't fill it past the add mark when checked good and hot. If you ever pull a trailer in hot weather you might be sorry you filled it anymore than that. The fluid expands way too much in extreme heat/load conditions because of the volume it holds and will kill it. Seen it happen every summer for years out here back when the C4 was used standard.

That truck is long gone, but I'll keep it in mind if I get another one

I checked all the fluids when I bought it except the trans (I forgot). Took it for a test drive, and the truck would rev up to around 3500-4000 RPM before slamming into gear and finally moving. Every time I came to a stop. The PO said it had been doing that as long as had owned it and that it was normal.

I drove it for about a week (~350mi) before my buddy asked if I had checked the trans fluid. Of course I had! Oh, wait...

So I pulled the dipstick, and dusty smoke came out of the tube along with a bone dry stick.

I checked the documentation, and the guy I bought it from had put about 2,000 miles on the odometer. He had just been using it to run trash to the dump for the last six months of ownership, and there was a sapling growing in the bed

The number of vehicles that come into work with either dry oil dipsticks or dry transmission dipsticks would surprise you.
