I know the JCR skid uses nutserts, which many find to be problematic (to put it mildly), and I can see why. It does however seem to provide more coverage, as well bolt to more locations. And I like that it bolts to the front edge of the cross member rather than the bottom.
As for Rusty's, I like the simplicity of the skid, and the price sure is nicer. But it uses self-tapping screws to attach to the frame rail. Better than nutserts, but I'm still dubious about the self-tapping screws. Is there enough metal thickness in the frame rail to reliably thread? I've had this problem before in non-vehicle related hobbies, so it concerns me. Maybe a non-issue in this particular application though. Not sure.
I'm running the Rusty's skid with my 242 transfer case. I also have stiffeners so there is a lot of metal I had to tap, was a workout getting them all the way in. It's great, heavy 1/4" skid plate. I'm happy with it vs the JCR one. I'm also using Rusty's crossmember.
