New to the Cherokee Forum, just purchased a 1996 Cherokee SE, one owner, 70K miles, trying to figure out what the hole in the center console is for, appears to be for a switch, can anybody help with this?

Does yours have the insert that goes in that hole? On my 97 the insert looks like an odd designed ashtray/Toll card holder. Is this the same as on a 96? lol

No insert, just the hole, console not original to the vehicle, not installed yet, just trying to figure out what goes in the hole, what its for.

Console has ashtray on backside, hole is on the front side, I think its to small to be for an ashtray. Thanks for the replys.

This one? Included is the ashtray insert. I say it is an odd ashtray because it has that straight piece coming off the left wall on the inside. What's that for? I "think" it is supposed to have a flap to cover the assembly, if so mine is missing. Excuse the rocks... It is still dirty inside from the roll over. lol

I'm pretty sure myself and others that have already chimed in here.... it really is an "ashtray". It is an odd shape for one, but pretty sure that's it. My 99 has the one on the back that you referenced too.
Is it shaped like a sideways big letter "D" (half crescent shaped) yours could've been cut out somehow.... but it is supposed to have a lid that closes on top of it.
Cool... It looked like mine was supposed to have a lid that lifts up and then slides straight down vertical in front of it. Bet I won't find one of those in a wrecking yard, bet they are all gone already. lol

It's weird what parts are still either reproduced or can still find in working order. I've found there's no real rhyme or reason to it.
Just wanted to say thanks for the responses, found out the hole in the front of the console is for a remote mirror switch,vthink I can come up with a blank to fill the hole, not ready to install power mirrors, kinda like the hand crank windows, less to fix if theres a problem, thanks again for the help.
