Pavement princess got new sway bar bushings and end link bushings today, that took care of the clunk in the front end. Installed the pass side fog light that I bought last week (that light was MIA when I bought the Jeep).
Also, I put close to 400 miles on the Jeep this past week (first week it's been road legal). So I'm liking the Jeep. Still have some more items to take care of, but it's getting better every time I cross off something my to do list.
Yeah, I'm thinking it was the windshield. It sprung a leak last year, and I sealed it up, but I think it may have given out again.
That is where mine was. Coming out just to the left of the passenger side visor. Timing was good for me though. I was in the process of getting rust issues on the hood and roof dealt with so I had my body guy handle that too. Figured if there was more then it just needing a new windshield seal and gunk, rust or rot maybe, he could handle that all at the same time. Turned out a remove and replace was all that was needed.
Finally finished installing a Warn VR8000s winch into my Rusty’s front bumper, and a Hi Lift jack on my Rockhard 4x4 rear tire carrier bumper.
Got a good deal on the winch and the Hi Lift from Rockhard 4x4. Shipped fast and free.
I like how the winch installs inside the bumper. Very unobtrusive:
I had to make an adapter plate as there wasn’t enough room between the bumper and the winch to bolt the fairlead directly to the bumper. The fairlead bolts to the plate, the plate bolts to the bumper using the lower winch bolts:
Lengthened the cables between the control pack and winch to install control pack under the hood next to the air box:
Added a wireless remote control, so I don’t have to open the hood to operate the winch. Found a good place next to the steering column for the remote:
The hi lift installs easily on the Rockhard 4x4 tire carrier:
i had (and have more yet) parts laying around to install as general maintenance. jeep died several times in the past 2 weeks so they got thrown on. entire distributor, plugs, wires, cps, and some exhaust work. was good for a week and then it died again but would not restart. left me stranded at a gas station, thankfully not far from home. spent the afternoon diagnosing a crank no start, at a gas station. we managed to misread voltage to the coil and i changed the cps again, to no avail. chased our tails and discovered that a 98 coil plug is different than a 97 :/ eventually replaced the coil and we were good. then got it home and changed the oil and trans fluid. still have radiator hoses and tstat and cooling system flush then it'll be good for the winter. long day.
edit: oh and the 4 yr old putco headlight harness is falling apart so i bought a lmc harness for it, gotta swap that, too. thinking i will fill the connections at the headlight plug with silicone so hopefully they won't corrode -as fast- again.
Aired down the tires, loaded her up with 4 adults and a dog and took out for a trail ride. Could not believe how well she behaved. Good ride and can mostly stay in second gear with 33s in 4low. Nothing extreme yet and I know she need lower gears and lockers but dang she put a smile on my face.
Been living the Jeep life lately. Lost the tail pipe on her last month, rusted from the inside and looked fine on the outside. Then I have been chasing a PO743 code for a couple of weeks now and finally just said the heck with it and changed all the shift solenoids and filter. No more CEL, but still getting the code. Before I would loose OD after a few miles of driving, now I get OD like it should. I am guessing that it is a shorted/broken wire some where in the harness and while testing the problem is hidden. Then today on my way to buy a better multimeter I got a very strong smell of fuel. Pulled over popped the hood and everything was dry, but when I looked under the Jeep there was a stream of gas pouring off the drivers side lower control arm mount Should be an easy fix, but the XJ is parked till I find the exact source of the leak and fix it.
Tried to install some extended brake lines. They didn't come with crush washers. Tomorrow, hopefully will be the day for extended brake lines. In fact, I'm calling it Extended Brake Line Tuesday. Also while working around down there. I noticed the breather line for the Dana 30 seems to have rotted off. I had about a hands length coming off of the pumpkin leading to nowhere. Add it to the list.
Bout the only thing I got done was undercoating the front fender wells and peeping a few areas for POR15.
