I have a 99 limited with the 4.7 going on 240,XXX miles and still has plenty of power no leaks, noises, or anything really( with the exception of a broken exhaust Mani stud) granted I'm the third owner and the first was a Chrysler mechanic so I guess I just got lucky.

2000 dakota with 195000 miles on the 4.7L, runs like a champ.......on my 3rd rear axle thought...LOL
9.25 dodge trac-loc axles like to go "boom" if you pull to many hole-shots....LOL
Engine maintenance....plugs, regular fluid and filter replacements.....these are the keys to longer engine life regardless of the engine being discussed.

I beat the ***** off my 4.7ho... its not happy anymore. I'm so not impressed with the 4.7 at all! I got it with 32k, and i'm just hitting 78... I wish I never got the thing. And cause I can't be bothered with fixing the head gasket, I just burp it once a week lol. I don't even care about it anymore. Awful Awful motor!

One thing you guys may not know is the 4.7HO has higher compression pistons and full floated wrist pins. It's designed to run on premium fuel, but will run well on regular, sort of a "flex-fuel" thing you might say. It also has larger valves and "stereo" knock sensors.
Check out wjjeeps.com for specifics. Look under "engines, 4.7HO."

Im getting a little scared...
I just bought an 04 WJ Limited with the V8, 4x4
I really wanted the V8 because I already own a 01 XJ with the 4.0
I wanted the extra power to tow
it has all the bells and whistles, which I love
bought it from original owners, bought new in cali
very well cared for and maintained
206K on vehicle
no engine work done or trans issues

Everyones opinions are great on this topic and having owned five Grand Cherokees, three with the 4.0, two with the 4.7, and all but one having over 200k on the clock, I'm sorta torn on the topic of reliability. I've ALWAYS heard great things about the 4.0, I've had only one 4.0 as a daily and two 4.7 daily drivers. Both of my 4.7 jeeps have over 227 k on them now. I no longer own the one, but know the guy I sold it to and he happened to bang that jeep up a bit and loved it so much he dropped 3k into getting it fixed back up. I was once told by someone that after 200 k the 4.7 is on borrowed time.. My current one was well maintained it's whole life and still purrs like new. As did my last one. My one 4.0 jeep had better torque it seemed though, I drove it after I traded it off to get inspected and, driving my 4.7 daily, the 4.0 with 180k pulled like crazy compared to the 4.7 I drive. I can't compair it to my current 4.0 jeep as that's a stroker and is now a 4.6 and has more HP now than alot of small block V8's

I personally own and daily drive the same 2 motors as you stated..... I have a 4.0 and the 4.7. My 4.0 has around 185 k and does feel more torquey then my 4.7. My 4.7 has 205 k and still runs strong, but I do all the work to them all. Well, honestly just got my 4.0 about a month ago, and had my 4.7 for about 2 years.

Same here, I maintain my own vehicles and even though it doesn't have the torque of the 4.0, or seem to at least, ( maybe a weight difference thing?) I've dollied two of my 4.0 jeeps with my current 4.7 jeep. Either way, I obviously love them, whichever engine they have, as I've had 5 99-04 grands

Thanks, silver and brown are the 4.7 jeeps and the rest 4.0. Current two are brown and lifted white, one I traded off for a bike was old blue and sold that bike and bought the lifted stroked one and my R6 with the $$ lol

And I got three of them for $700 or less. The blue one I traded my 91 Thunderbird for, that was all but used up. First white one was $700, silver I payed $650 for, sold it for $1700 after replacing O2 sensors and getting a fresh inspection, the current lifted one with 50k on the driveline was $650 as well. Payed $1500 for the brown one, but that's the only one that I payed a bit for. Lol

I worry constantly about my 4.7. Have owned my 2000 for 3 years and much has gone bad, but not with the engine. I keep and eye out for a 4.0 for sale, rarely see them. The 4.7's are available. To an objective eye this could mean that, all the 4.0's are shot and off the road and the 4.7's have lasted and thus available. Or everybody is keeping their 4.0 and the others are selling their 4.7's. And I am seeing much higher prices here from both private parties and dealers than I see else ware. Both dealers and individual sellers are pricing their vehicles about the same , holding on the price. And selling.
