You don't have to like in Alaska to break this part! Just broke the tabs off mine (handle is still more or less there but I can pull it off if I try). Dealer wants $54 for that part here in Canada. I'm thinking of using epoxy to glue mine to the gate but I'm sure someone will talk me out of that...
Also, might just attach a different style handle to the back fibreglass lift gate and use the lock button only to unlatch the lift gate.
i also think cause of the worn out liftgate arms there wasnt any help pushing the hatch lose and had to put all the strenght on the handle, this will probably be a complete fix new handle and new liftgate arms. also i was wondering if there might be some treatment for the rubber seal around the hatch that wont stick when it freezes as much as it does now.

Yeah-We get a lot of freezing rain here and the liftgate is usually stuck tight when that happens. Not a good design for letting the water or moisture out. Haven't tried the silicone spray
