Under the dash in the passenger side fire wall. Yeah it is a pain. It's time consuming

Pretty sure they make the body for the XJ, then the FIRST thing that is installed is the heater core. Then the dash, seats, interior and drive-train.

I had to replace mine last winter. It was a very long process but not as terrible as I expected. It was well worth it doing it myself and saving the $700+.
I replaced the evaporator while I was at it and I am glad I did because the old one was shot.

Yeah, I have done it 3 times now and the first time only sucks because of how long it takes to find every single bolt holding the dashboard on.

Round 2 was much easier because I lost half of those bolts during the first swap, so I only had half as many bolts to remove

In all seriousness, the third time was on my friend's XJ and it took us about 4 hours start to finish since I already knew the exact steps. There is a few write-ups around the internet and I created a supplemental write-up here;

Its not an easy task, but it certainly is doable with even the most basic socket set. Takes about 6 hours the first time but I like working in the garage so perfect for me (8 hours is starting to approach "chore" status, and 4 hours is not enough garage time )

I did have to have my AC Evac'd and refilled, but that only cost me $75 by a craigslist HVAC guy operating out of his home garage (really good deal, shop wanted to charge me $50 for evac and $100 for fill), so there is merit in having a shop do it (reasoning being its only ~$550 or so for the heater core, and the rest is the AC service)

Lol. Funny, but I bet there is truth to your assumption.

Thanks everyone for the replies...........I kinda thought it was on the passenger side as most I have done are but did not know you had to remove the fudgin' dash.....WTF.

I remember on my last removal it was on a 89 Ford Ranger work truck and it only took me 20 minutes-no sh**! remove the panel under glove box and there it was.

Looks like I better plan on a Saturday in the garage with a couple cold ones-ha!

Yup, it's not really that bad just time consuming. I swapped mine in 8-10 hours of casual wrenching, also had to talk a co-worker through a job over the phone during it. If I was pressed and stayed on it I could have probably done it in 4 hrs or less. Good luck, let us know how it goes.
