Thanks for the reply, unrelated to my issue tho.

Current question - after replacing the distributor cap and rotor...is there a gasket that sets a distance so the rotor will not rattle around in the cap?

Answered my own question ...

Fel-Pro - Distributor Mounting Gasket
Line: FEL | Part # 70051
$1.99 Each

.......

Jeep has been fixed.

Issue - first owner had cap changed, failed to put gasket.

- I floored it for the first time most likley in its life....distributor rotor blew up.

- new distributor and rotor installed, vehicle fired right up

- noticed a ticking noise due to gasket missing.... rotor was ticking inside of cap.

- added gasket....fixed jeep.

Close thread ? 😀

Good that you got it fixed - it sound like you were asking about a gasket between the cap and distributor ...... but yeah you need that mount gasket, I do believe it also prevents oil from seeping out where the distributor enters the engine.

Did you see any oil down there?

Default Ggasket

Yes^

Without the gasket the distributor cap sits too close to the rotor.

The rotor rotates when th3 engine us on similar to a clock...or a blender. It spins around and it will hit each spark plug connection inside the hub of that spacer / gasket is missing...

- also, it prevents water, moisture...oil etc from entering / leaving the cap.

+++ the previous installation by the old distributor installer was done without the gasket. I thought it was valve tick. The tick was the rotor slamming around due to not enough clearance. After I gave the jeep WOT it blew up... [old parts]

- no issues now ___/+=×_=>/

Jeep forums were lagging previously ^ I was not getting shown replies until after I posted several times more.

That gasket seals the base of the distributor against the engine block.

There is no gasket between the distributor cap and distributor body.

The cap sits right on top of the distributor body, held down by two screws.

Don't be fooled into thinking that a gasket at the base of the distributor will seal off the cap that sits on top of the distributor.

Oh and advice for future issues, define clearly the problem and all of the symptoms. " Jeep will not start " without specific details will get you all kinds of responses.

ALSO - Do not throw parts at a problem, until it has been properly diagnosed.

Good luck with your Cherokee !!!!!!!
