bad ujoints

the fact that you say it "growls" usually means the pinion bearing is bad. First thing i would do is pop the cover off the diff and check out the gears for wear/damage

I used an allen head bolt and it fit great in the spring perch, no drilling required.

Under heavy acceleration? It possible under acceleration youre lifting the pinion too high.

Diff is clean ... if it was a bearing or u-joint would it not vibrate all the time to some extent?

It could be driveline/rear diff related. Check these out:

Or, and don't rule this out, a bad motor and or transmission mount.

Have you tried lifting the back tires off the ground and spinning the drive shaft with the cover off? Sometimes the lack of oil in the gears and bearings will amplify the noise of a defective part.

Doing an s10 bastard pack. Now correct me if I'm wrong.
The s10 pack has a 5/16 center pin

While the xj pack has a 3/8 center pin

Therefore when I purchase new center pins, I need to get 5/16 ones and widen the hole in the xj pack?

The s10 pack should have a 3/8 while the xj has a 5/16, the xj spring or spring's will have to be drilled out to accept the new bigger pin plus the spring perch will need to be enlarged also.

Speaking of leaf spring pins. What kind of bit is required to drill? I've tried a generic bit and that didn't work.

I thought everyone used masonry bits on the leaf springs. Could be wrong.
