Default Transmission Help

I have a 1992 Jeep Cherokee 4.0 4x4. I cannot get it to shift out of 1st gear (Auto Tranny), no matter what I do. It has reverse and 1st gear. I've dropped the pan and there where no metal shavings, I also cleaned the valve body and replaced the screen and fluids and still nothing. I only blew the valve bodu out with an air gun, is there a special way to clean it? Or could it be one of the three brass looking sensors on the inside when you drop the pan? What could it be? Thank you for any input.

Also, manually shifting does no good either...

Hi, welcome to the forum from fantic.
I assume you are saying that the transmission will not shift to second gear, and stay in first. reverse, neutral and park work right?
Try this: put it in 1-2 and rev it up to 5000rpm, if it goes in second gear, your TPS sensor is probably bad.
If it doesn't get in 2nd, swap in a new TCU.

Before you do that check the wiring to the TCU from the tranny and from the TPS. Sounds like something has become unplugged.

I'm thinking it's got to be something simple like that. Because it went out while I was drving. It down shifted and then would shift in and out of fourth gear almost non stop. I eventually had to drive it home like a manual tranny. But yes I do have neutral, park, 1st gear and reverse. So it does have to be something simple. Thank you for the input so far guys.

Also look at your governor, if it has a governor, the governor valve stuck would cause the same problems.

I'm not too sure if they do. I'm not too tech savvy here lol. Is there a test light or meter I can buy to check the TCU or TPS, or the three sensors inside the tranny pan near the valve body? Or is it really a game of hit and miss?

Also, I found the TPS, but where is the TCU located? Sorry.. I know enough to repair cars, but this is my first Jeep and it's all new to me.

Hi all
I'm new to the forum, but have been running jeeps for many years.
I have a '92 with the same issues, can anyone point out where the TCU is located?
It would be awesome to get my baby back on the road, a widget swap is way better than a rebuild!

Thanks for your time.

Well I got it... I just happened to look at the kick-down cable, next to the throttle and it had slipped out about an inch. Put it to where it should be, tranny shifts like a charm now... it's crazy how simple things can be. But thank you everyone for your help!

Make sure you look at the trans fluid and see if it looks bad I would change filter and maybe have the trans flushed if it looks or smells burned, I have seen transmissions burn up without there kick down cable attached.

After I adjusted the cable it ran fine. Went about 12 miles or so and it down shifted again and now it wont shift again. I've replaced the fluid and the lines. I'm thinking it may be the TPS but i'm not too sure. Any more ideas or info?
