jeep is lifted 3 inches, I don't know if that plays a factor, it will engage in 4hi after playing with the shifter a little, but 4lo thinks it's in the neutral position, linkage issue maybe?? please help

 

Is your transmission in neutral and are you moving slowly while you shift from 4hi to 4lo? Have you taken a look at the linkage?

Also what case do you have?

 

yeah I put it in neutral, shift to 4lo, then put it in drive and it thinks it's in neutral on the 4 wheel shifter, yes I have taken a look at the linkage, but don't really understand how it's set up and how to adjust it

 

If you have had 4wl in the past outing,check the cross member. If its been smashed up it will not move linkage arm the amount required,just adjust it as is and good to go,''been there''

how do I adjust it so I know it's in the right spot? some people say shift it in to neutral from underneath, then shift to neutral from the shifter and then tighten linkage, will that work?

 

Put transfer case in lo then shifter in low and adjust linkage accordingly .

Does every time.

 

Make sure that bolt is decently tight or else that rod will just slip again. If your tired of your shifting feeling spungie and can't really tell if the case locked in; we have our simple replacement linkage that tightens things up and makes shifting smoother.

This is probably a stupid question, how can you tell if the transfer case is in 4lo? I am trying to adjust the trunnion/linkage as well.

 

Transfer Case Linkage Adjustment

Straight from the FSM:

SHIFT LINKAGE ADJUSTMENT
(1) Shift transfer case into 4L position. (make sure your shifter is fully in the 4L position)
(2) Raise vehicle.
(3) Loosen lock bolt on adjusting trunnion (Fig.
87).
(4) Be sure linkage rod slides freely in trunnion.
Clean rod and apply spray lube if necessary.
(5) Verify that transfer case range lever is fully
engaged in 4L position. (you can do this under the vehicle at the transfer case)
(6) Tighten adjusting trunnion lock bolt.
(7) Lower vehicle

 

Thanks for this. I have seen it a few times. My shifter was all messed up, so when I had it in 4hi, it was actually in 2hi. When I pulled it back to 4lo it was in 4hi. I just need to get underneath the jeep to check out the position and adjust the trunnion.
