Description:
This is a 1987 XJ I bought to tinker with. I still mess around with it with my brother who adopted it in August of '10; he recently put a full (shiny) aluminum radiator in. When I bought it the cylinder head was warped and the oil looked like a milkshake. I pulled the engine, painted the engine bay, and bought a crate engine from J&C Automotive (in Washington, I think?). Installed it myself and restored the emissions system so that the Renix computer could run the way it was supposed to. Then I started replacing interior parts, including a ghoulish headliner with the same color but from a newer XJ at the junkyard. After getting most of the stock parts squared away and the mechanics running well, I lifted it. And then it just went from there... These are pics just before I passed it on and jumped into my new project.

Fire Extinguisher in back, 120v and 12v outlet. Behind this panel is a 1200 watt inverter from a 1awg wire from the secondary batter (with a 300amp fuse at the battery, of course). Great for powering rotary saws, grinders, tv's, blenders, etc.

'96(?) console with switchbox for accessories. Switches from OTRATTW.com. The switches manage the fog lights, engine fan, roof lights, and reverse lights. The engine fan is selectable between always on or on @ 215°F, off at 200°F. All are lit when powered.

Here's the stereo, an Alpine EX10. I put a variable amp control inline with the amp underneath my back seat, that way I can adjust the volume of the unit without an actual stereo (never listen to AM/FM, tape, or CD). When I start the XJ the bluetooth connects wirelessly to my iPhone and starts playing music, whatever playlist I last selected.

Left switch is to charge the secondary battery, right switch is to use it. When the key is out and ignition off, the right switch can be used to power the accessories without using any power from the main (starting) battery. Everything is done with relays or solenoids, so all the power isn't running through these switches...

Gauge pod shows voltage of secondary battery, both to tell whether it's charging while the 240amp alternator are spinning and how much juice is left while in use. The other is a tap into my O2 sensor to determine fuel ratio.

Hi-Lift Jack mounted behind a custom tire mount that bolts directly to the back hatch. On the other side of the hatch it is reinforced with strap metal. The hatch is heavy and requires a separate support to hold it in the up position.

JRC Offroad light bar on top with four HID's (two are 6000K, two are 4300K) powered by 55w ballasts that sit between the headliner and cieling. In this pic, you can see the rear doors that I've replaced and are a different white. I now have power windows in the back, crank windows in the front.

Engine bay with TRUE cold, or at least cooler, air intake. The cone filter sits between the plastic grill and the header panel, in front of the radiator and any other heat. Electric pushfan keeps engine very cool on hot days, can be shut off on cold days or water crossings. A/C and metal stock fan removed to reduce wear and drag on engine.

These are the relay and fuse boxes connected to the switch box inside. Everything inside (fuses, relays, etc.) is labeled for the next owner, as well as my poor memory. The top box holds the solenoid to include/exclude the secondary battery and disconnect it when the engine isn't running.

The Optima Red Top is no longer in the vehicle, it has been replaced with a deeper cycle battery and the main battery replaced with a higher cranking battery.
