If I find a NP242 transfer case from a ZJ of the same year and swap my NP249, will I still have to take the 242 apart? I know all 96-98 ZJ's had the .840" 23 spline input shafts so I was thinking it would be a simple process without haven’t to take the cases apart to switch input shafts and planetary gears and such.
Picked up a 242 out of a 97 4.0 zj. We’ll see how it fits in my 97 5.2. I’m hoping the input shaft is the same size. If not it’ll be a good opportunity to open and refresh the 242 before installing it. Should probably look for a seal/bearing kit for it. The junk yard around me is one of the ones where they pull the parts, I told him I wanted the driveshafts and the guy just cut them in half 🙄 so hopefully mine will work

When I picked it up from the pick a part it had a reman tag on it so I just threw some fluid in it when I installed it and put in the 4.0 driveshaft and have had no issues. Other than im not sure if 2wd is fully engaging but I might just have to order a shift mechanism for it
