Question Grand cherokee gears

Hey guys!

I'm looking to regear my WJ. I want to go 4.56 or 4.10
And now I have a question.
Is the DANA 44A and DANA 44 HD the same axle?

Thanks in advance!

I'm thinking the D44a is the aluminum center and the D44 HD is the steel one, and they are NOT the same.

Dave is correct. you will also find that the options for the 44A are not the same as the 44HD. not too many aftermarket parts are offered for the 44A in comparison to the 44HD.

The D44A has more parts for it now being that differential comes in later model Jeeps as well. I have one in my 04 WJ a stock one with 3.73's and lsd front D30 and rear.

that's good to hear Fred. when I was looking to "upgrade" there were not as many options offered for the A so I stuck with the D35.

The gear ratio you choose is dependent on the tire size you plan on running. If you want 33 inch tires, 4.10's would probably be a good choice.

I was told the diff and gears in the 44hd and 44a was the same thing.I know they both have a bigger diff and ring gear then a standard 44 but never had them side by side to know sure if its the same or not.But for gears http://eastcoastgearsupply.com/c-105...d-pinions.html locker its arb or lunchbox.Or being a wj if you got money to burn you could do a jk rubicon axles swap. They are a hair wider but same lug pattern.
