im planning on removing my doors soon, and since my one front speaker is shot, theyre going, and will be moved. i have a pair of 2 inch speakers along with a pair tweeters to go with them. i was originally going to put these in a bmw but that car died.

could i swap these out for the front speakers? would they work?

 

No. They won't fit or match up with the connectors. For front door speaker sizes, I don't know which Jeep you have, but here's the aftermarket sizes that'll fit:

Cherokee XJ (1984-1996): 5.25" (5 x 1/4") (Can use larger size 6.5"/6 x 1/2" OR 6.75"/6 x 3/4" if you remove the factory plastic grilles and use the grilles that came with the new speakers instead)
Cherokee XJ (1997-2001): 5.25" (5 x 1/4"), 6.5" (6 x 1/2"), OR 6.75" (6 x 3/4")
Cherokee KL (2014-Now): 6X9" (If Alpine, you MUST install component speakers OR bypass the factory amp and run new speaker wiring up to the front door speakers)
Grand Cherokee ZJ (1993-1998): 6.5" (6 x 1/2") OR 6.75" (6 x 3/4") (In the 1996-1998 ZJ's it looks like a 6X9" will fit in the front doors due to the oval-shaped metal grilles, but they will NOT fit)
Grand Cherokee WJ (1999-2004): 6X9" (If Infinity Gold, you MUST install component speakers OR bypass the factory amp and run new speaker wiring up to the front door speakers)
Grand Cherokee WK (2005-2010): 6X9" (If Boston Acoustics, you MUST install component speakers OR bypass the factory amp and run new speaker wiring up to the front door speakers)
Grand Cherokee WK2 (2011-Now): 6X9" AND 1" Tweeter (If Alpine or Harman/Kardon, you MUST install component speakers OR bypass the factory amp and run new speaker wiring up to the front door speakers))

i was going to get new connectors/make a custom housing for them. i have a xj, and was just wondering they would even work if i did get connectors. aslo i have a upgraded headunit if that makes any difference

 

Speakers are speakers, they all work using the exact same source (2 wires, a pos and a neg) so technically yes, they will all work, no matter what head unit you use, or what vehicle you put them in.

The big issue is size. If you can fit them in, almost anything can be done, connectors are simply wire terminals, and those can be swapped out as well.

You typed in that you have 2 inch speakers and tweeters? Was that a mistype, because that's going to be pretty small to fit into the existing hole. You could do it and use the rears for mids and lows, but with the way the XJ is laid out, i would invest in some solid 6.5"s full range.

So yeah, they will work fine. I'm guessing you plan on mounting them in the dash or pillars?

 

I can almost guarantee you that they won't produce any bass in the doors... my mom has a BMW and the little 2" speakers and 1" tweeters don't produce any bass at all. I recommend at least a 5x 1/4".

That would make the 2" speakers easier. There are the speaker mounts on the lower dash, and they could fit there.

 

Yup doors are coming off. I was planning on putting them in the foot well, but the pillers would probably be a better option. I'm also planning on getting new rear speakers and I have a sub to install, so that will deal with the bass issue. I just didn't want to replace the factory amp, just wanted to make sure the speakers would sound alright when wired up

 

They may sound good or they may sound like crap, it depends on the speaker quality.

Will they work? Sure.

 

I'd do the lower dash or the pillars, or even up by the windshield, keeping your factory front door speakers intact or else upgrading them.

I'd honestly, if the doors are gonna be removed, get a pair of kick panel enclosures and mount a pair of 5X 1/4" component speakers in the enclosures. They do make them especially for the XJ, all you have to do is install the speakers, mount the enclosures, and run the wiring up to the radio.

I mean, any speakers you have at this point are going to be a custom install... so yeah, anything will work. And yeah, you'll have subwoofer for bass, but those 2" speakers won't produce any mid-range to speak of. Plus, if you don't run a crossover to them, they will distort as well.

I'd recommend getting at least a 5.25" speaker and getting a soundbar out of an XJ in the junkyard (96 and down) and throwing a set of 5.25's or 6.5's in them. Then you'll at least have more of a full range to work with. Those 2" speakers are designed to be complimentary mid/high range speakers to work with a component system... not be your full-range or even wide-range speaker.

 

True... or as I said do a kick panel install, but the sound bar idea in the front sounds even better, literally and figuratively! (:
