Question weirdest aftermarket push start issue

I have a 2000 XJ and am trying to add a push start button to it.

A little backstory before the purists come at me-- (I get it trust me)
My xj was stolen a few weeks ago and somehow recovered with minimal damage. The only issue was the key cylinder being snapped out of it. So the last couple weeks I've been driving it to work just using a wrench as my key (don't worry the steering lock was broken too). The housing I would need to replace is connected to the steering column, and I didn't want to go through that hassle with it being my daily driver. So i thought I could easily instal an aftermarket push start button to bypass the need for a key at all.

Okay so I am 95% sure I've wired it correctly, tapping each of the ignition, starter, brake, etc, wires from the ignition switch harness.
when I plug in the new relay into the new control module, the car tries to crank by itself when the key is in the off position. doesn't turn over, just cranks. When it is in the accessory or start position, it doesn't crank even when I press the button.

From the research I've done, it seems that the actuator is stuck in a position preventing this, but I'm really not sure.
If anybody has any trouble shooting ideas, or just another way I could comfortably have a wrench as my key (lol) please let me know.
