Has anyone ever hooked up a remote starter on their own? How complicated is it? I have a stock 1993 XJ with no alarms or anything like that.
today or tmmw i will attempt this on one of my 98s
a simple remote starter, bought only for the start and run for a bit every 3hrs, parking at work has no plugins, dont wanna come back after a couple days at -40 and not be able to start

There is good wiring information at readyremote.com
I think you're going to need two relays for the door locks if you have them.
Other than the relays for the locks cherokees are about as easy as it gets for remote starters. Buy a well known brand remote start and a good pair of crimpers, don't skimp on the zip ties, and take your time to make it clean.
If you have any questions when you're working on it post em up.

I had one on my 92 for a long time. Very easy to install with the right wire color reference and the XJ's easily accessible ignition wiring cluster. Just shoved the brick on top of the kick panel. That was probably 15 years ago — I'll bet whatever unit you can buy now will be much better than what I had.
Only ran into two issues: One was disabling the alarm, which you don't have. The other was crank time. The 4.0 likes a long cold crank, and the unit I had would stop prematurely, then try again after a few seconds and it would fire right up. If yours is the same way, might want to look for a model that has the option to set for a long crank.
When it worked, I loved to see the running lights cut on in a dark parking lot and hear it fire.
