Exclamation Recurring Speedometer Problem

I have an issue with my 2001 Jeep Cherokee Sport that has been happening for a while now. I will be driving down the freeway probably 70-75 and the speedometer and the rpm gauge will die and go all the way down to zero and the airbag light will come on. When this happens I tap on the brakes and they will go right back to normal. My car doesn't stall thank god but I'm not really sure what is wrong with it, it only happens once in a blue moon but it scares the crap out of me every time. Any suggestions as to what might be causing this?

so nothing happens to your speed, etc, you just get the gauge dropout?

Correct, nothing happens to the speed thankfully. It just drops and then when I press on the brakes it comes back.

It helps point to where the problem may be, if your whole system electrical is doing something, it means something else.

Check your Fuses, both in the Cabin and in the Engine.

Check the wires, you could just be experiencing a Sympathetic Vibration that is making either the power or the ground disconnect for a moment.

I'd check your gauge cluster plugs. I occasionally have the same problem. I took apart some of my dash on the drivers side to replace the weatherstripping on the door. After some research I decided the plugs for my gauges have come loose. Always while driving and after hitting a few bumps all my gauges except for fuel stop working. My quick fix is to hit the dash above the steering wheel, but I really need to take it apart and fix the connections. Try the punch it seems to work.
